I recently came across a very nice original seat pan/support tube off of a '41 H. It is complete with the tool box and original decals. I have a '40 H with the spring seat. I don't farm with it, but use it for hay rides and misc. little chores. I personally think it looks better than the spring seat and am considering swapping it out. What are your opinions? It sure LOOKS less comfortable, but are there other things I'm overlooking? Its nice that it flips back to allow you to stand though.... (If I do swap it out, I may have a completely rebuilt spring style to sell!)

Steven f/AZ said: (quoted from post at 17:33:48 10/22/07) I"ve had both, for a work tractor the spring/deluxe seat with shock absorber is the best and most comfortable.

For a display tractor, or if you really want to stand up a lot, the pipe seat is OK. My real problem with the pipe seat was hitting bumps and bottoming out, that hurts the old back quite a bit.
Steven, if you are bottoming out, tighten the bolt on the front.

I"ve got the original flip seat on my H and I will trade it any day for the other kind if anybody near W. WA has one.

This may tell you something. We have owned this farm for over 100years. Like most it has an iron pile on it. We have never owned anything but IH. While cleaning up the iron pile I found parts of at least two and maybe three of the ole flip over seats. I am 52, grew up on the H that was delivered new here in April of 44 and I dont ever remember it having the flip over type.

Sometime in the mid-40's the Monroe seat with the big spring, shock in rear became available, perhaps that is what you remember. We had a 47 H with that seat. The IH version with the big spring, shock in front came after that, I believe. Not sure about the 39-40 seat, but I think the 41-up pipe seats all flipped over.

I still have the tractors. they both, M and H, have the Monore type. My dad or Grandpa, somehow junked several of the flip seats or they wouldn't be in the iron pile as no one else ever threw junk there.

I had the old style pipe seat on my H, didn't take me long to buy a spring seat with shock and install it. The pipe seat bottoms out and jams your back.
