Should I...

Should I pull the break covers off my H and have a look-see? Maybe clean things up? I eyeballed them yesterday to see what kind of job it would be. I'll need some tips if I dig in. But the breaks work. How well? I have no idea. I have nothing to compare it with. All I know is when I press the pedals the tractor stops.
- Should I pull apart, inspect, and clean?

- What should I inspect for?

- Where can I find adjustment procedures? Owners manual is a bit vague.

CNKS said: If you are doing what you call a restoration, and it is indeed a show tractor, pull them off, and replace the seals and bands unless the bands show little wear. Sooner or later the seals are going to leak, it is inevitable. Maybe the first time you show it.

I'm going to pull all that apart when I strip and paint it. But until then I just want to get it running and get the "new" parts on it so I can use it. Then when it's mechanically sound, I'll tear it down, replace seals and paint it.

In that case forget the leaks for the moment, and do as mentioned below and see if you can slide the wheels. Put it in 2nd gear, if 4th or higher and one locks and the other doesn't you are in deep doo doo.

I just pulled the covers off of mine before I had to help the neighbor with harvest. Will post some pics when I get time.

Mine look like they are leaking and someone welded the arm to the brake band shaft, had to grind it off third party image

Randy

Also someone posted just recently how to adjust then and I printed it off, but I'll be darned if I can find it again to link to.

Just my thought...I thought my brakes worked great. (been using them on flat ground and they stopped the tractor in 5th) Until I decided to go down a hill and essentially had no brakes. Now I am replacing the bands.

You should be able to lock the tires on gravel and slide them... there shouldn"t be any squealing or oil leaking around the covers.

If you have all that covered, don"t bother taking them apart.

Makes sense guys. And that was my initial thought. But brakes (I just realized I spelled the "breaks" above... third party image) are a serious safety issue. So I just wanted to be smart with a peice of equipment I know so very little about.
Thanks for the advice.

Mike I agree with the two posts below. If there's nothing obviously wrong with them, leave them alone until they obviously NEED attention. Seems like most times when a person tears into something like that to just "look and see", stuff happens like bolts twisting off, parts dissapearing, etc. etc. and that inspection winds up being a big sometimes expensive project that didn't really have to be done.

Focus efforts and expenses first on those obvious things that are crying out for attention.

For you right now Mike, if it works, don't fix it.

if there is no oil leaking out of the covers and it'll kill the engine when you let out the clutch with the breaks applied then leave em alone.
