im getting a tractor from my aunt, its an ih 340 with a wide front and its a diesel. thats all i know about it off hand, will get seriel #s this week. the block is cracked from my cousin doing a clutch job, didnt have somthing aligned right and was useing the engine bolts to draw it tight and it was binding and the block let loose. i need a new engine and was wondering what model engines would bolt up or am i looking for an engine that was only in the 340. this has been sitting for20yrs in the barn, still blocked up as if it happened yesterday. any info about this unit is appreciATED. thanks john

finding an engine might be why they have let it sit for 20yrs. when my uncle passed in 85, it pretty much ended the farming on the property. fixing it to use on the property for food plots is my main goal, it would also help my aunt free up some space in 1 of the barns.

Yep, that's my ugly mug down there in the below post. Bought my 340D used/not running. It needed a lot of work, head, crank, block, etc. Found a D-166 power unit motor in NY and paid to have it shipped to WA. Ended up not using the block as I would have needed to use a flex plate at the rear. (Mounting bolts wouldn't line up). Used the head and crank out of it and the good block is just sitting here. At least my old block was able to be lock stitched and is holding good now. Since that picture was taken, I added a Schwartz WFE after re-engineering it to fit.

Not to discourage you from looking, but, it`s probably a real hard find to come up with a replacement block for a 340D. Back this summer I was talking to a fellow who had a 340D utility with a cracked block for sale. He had a quite extensive IH tractor collection and contacts all over the country. He said he searched high and low and couldn`t come up with a good block.I`ll just throw this out there and don`t know how bad the old block looks, but is welding the block a possibility ???

thanks for the info, i think my hardest thing will be finding a replacement engine. ive done some searching and no luck yet, im not sure if other models have the same block. it would be nice finding a running motor but not likly. i just wonder if this same block was used in other displacements? ill keep searching, any other ideas let me know. than ks john

If memory serves, the 340 desel originally came with the D-166 engine in it. The D-166 was used in both the 340 wheeled tractors as well as the TD-340 crawlers/dozers among others I'm sure. I am sure the are other engines that will fit, I just cannot recall what they are at this time. I'm sure someone else will pitch in.
