i just bought a ih 350u that will only idle. when you try to go past idle it will sputter and then quit. sometimes it will run for a few minutes and then quit. could this be caused by the govenor? how does it work?. is there anything else that could cause this?

Real odd, but check the air intake/ oil bath air cleaner area for restrictions. An oil bath air cleaner cup full of dirt will not let in much air.

Governor is not likely, fuel as described by Steve is likely. First be sure you have a good steady pencil sized flow out of the line that goes to the carb. If so, clean and put a kit into it carb. Don't forget the screen in the carb that the fuel line screws into. If not, it's in the line, sediment bowl or the tank itself. Otherwise it is a less likely electrical problem as described below.

Points set too close will do this. Carb almost completely plugged will do this. Inline fuel filter that"s plugged or too small will do this. Plugged/crimped fuel line will do this. Rust and crud accululated over the fuel line screen at the bottom of the gas tank will do this. I"d check points and condenser first then check fuel flow out the drain on the bottom of the carb.

Bad condenser will do this. Check color of spark.
