How do you remove Petcocks?

I bought an oil pan from the junk yard today. It looks like it's in ok condition, maybe needs a little straightening around the drain plug. But the petcocks aren't stock. One is just a plug, and the other is a block and something else. The dirt and oil are pretty built up, so I have to see what it looks like. How do I remove them from my old pan so I can pull the ones off the "new" pan and replace them?

I tried to remove it. It's in good shape, but I can't get it out. Does it just screw in like a petcock?

Yup, there is a dipstick sticking through there. So that answers that question. I'll consider keeping it based on looks, but I am shooting for originality, as this isn't a working tractor. But still, I just may keep it.

If you have an aftermarket dipstick that screws into a petcock socket, you may want to use it or trade it for other things that you are in need of.

They usually sell kinda high on ebay.

I was luckey when I removed a set of petcocks from a M oil pan, both of them unscrewed without any trouble.

I used a set of channel lock pliers and wrapped a rag around the petcocks to prevent marking them.

The first thing you need is removing petcocks is a nice cage to put them in. Then, you trail a little chicken feed from where the petcocks roam about normally into the cage. Then, the petcocks eat the chicken feed. When they get into the cage, you shut the cage door and carry them off. This same technique works for pethens, too. (OK, so this is an old joke!!)

What you are calling a block thing may be a dipstick. that is a much better way to check the oil than the petcocks. Among other problems with the petcocks is they tend to be messey when checking oil. A dipstick is the only way to go regardless of what the "correct people" may think. Armand

I had one of those dipsticks on an M. Kind of a handy little thing, but definately not accurate.

if they are installed in the original holes they should just unscrew.

Pipe wrench oughta do it. Strap wrench if you're lucky.
