Think I'm going diesel queer. Price of running these old gassers is painfull. Other than the Contential out of a 350, will anything else fit fairly easily into a Super H? Can't find any diesel old Farmalls out my way. Mike

I recently saw an H converted with a mid 1950's Fordson Major Diesel engine. It was on E Bay, evidently coverted in spain and brought into england. So that might go for you. Your talking of fuel prices-in England we are paying about $9.00 per gallon gas or deisel. Most of us are still using Tractor vaporising oil(distillate) trouble is thats no longer on the market so we are mixing our own. about 80% parrafin or kero 20% gas to give it a good flame front and a small quantity two cycle oil to add the required lubricating qualities- oh and a bit of prayer Mike Farmer

I'm planning on going into Bio-diesel. Growin' it, pressin' it, and processin' it. Heat the house, neibor's, and fathers too. All wile using a little over 10 acres. Rape seed. Needs little fertilizer...manure only seems to work fine in the test plots I've grown. Crowds out the weeds too. Mike

#2 diesel is about 25 cents a gal cheaper here. Off road diesel. At the pump it is about 40 cents more.

Big difference! Regualr gas is like $2.60 give or take. On Road is 2.99 yesterday, off road last week was 2.59. I havent bought off road this week, so I cant compare, but I would think it would take a while to recoup the money invested at only a .25 cent difference.

Mike: The suggestions you have so far are good, but from my point of view why not stay IH diesel. I doubt if you will find a D-188 out of a 504 or a D-239 out of a 544, those would bolt right in and require very little modification.

The D-239 that came in European built IH tractors, is the same 239 used in the 544 except the front engine cover will not be designed for attaching to Farmall frame rails. There is also a 3 cylinder version of that engine, D-179.

I didn't delve into this too far, but 25 years ago I did give some consideration to finding a diesel for my 300. A tractor wrecker near me at that time had a bunch of these European built tractors with 179 and 239 engines. These were damaged tractors from an insurance claim. That is the avenue I'd check out, as I think one of these German built IH diesels would bolt up at clutch housing.

At the big tractor show in Temple TX earlier this month, I saw an H with a late model Volkswagon diesel, a 1.6 liter. I didn't get to talk to the owner or hear it run, but it was quite a sanitary installation. It looked like there was an additional motor plate for a spacer/adaptor and the port side frame rail had been widened slightly. The whole tractor was nicely painted and fixed up. I don't remember if I took a picture of it. I'll look and if I did I'll post it.

A diesel H sounds pretty good. But if you get that kind of power you better beef up that rearend because thay aren't made for anymore horsepower than that four banger.

You may be able to put a Detroit diesel in there like the 6V53. These were used in a lot of military vehicles such as the M113 and M577. If there's any government auctions in your area you may find one that's been excessed. Hal

I've always dreamed of having a 350 Chevy in one.
probably wont ever get it done though. A diesel would be neat too. Go for it.
