Yep, thats what in a hurry got me. Hopefully I only ruined the battery. Any one else done this and if so how bad was it. It's on my 45 farmall H (points) When I hand started the tractor amp meter went to the negative side. Give me your thoughts.

You didn't hurt a thing.

Drain it clear down and recharge the right direction.

I did it with a 350, the previous postings are correct and will work. Discharge completely and charge slowly over a couple of days. A 2 amp charger works great. Darald

Its pretty easy to give her a slow complete doornail dead discharge (use a light etc),,,,,then attempt a good long slow recharge,,,,, ,,then install the battery n polarize the genny,,,,, ,,, START HER UP N SEE WHAT HAPPENS nuttin ventured nuttin gained

If the ammeter swings to heavy discharge upon shutdown, the cutout relay may be burned/stuck closed..... .

Polarize the generator and see if it charges. If the battery stays up don't worry about it. I doubt if you damaged anything except the battery. When I accidentally hook it up backwards, I get enough sparks to immediately know it's wrong -- your battery must have been very dead and may not have held a charge even if connected correctly.

A fellow I knew did this several years ago on a C Farmall. He just discharged and battery and recharged it with the correct hook-up and it worked fine.

It"s happened to me before. I took an extra tractor light, connected to the battery and left it on till the battery was completely discharged, then connected the battery charger the right way and charged it. You probably could just turn on your tractor lights and leave them on till the battery is completely discharged.

If you run the battery dead by leaving the lights on and charge it up the right way everything should be alright.
