Next question, boy I wish I was able to give some advice.

I am looking for a very simple mower for my 1950 M. I just want to mow some scrubby grasses from our deer lease. Doesn't have to be big, maybe 5 feet and I don't have a 3 point set up. Does anyone have a model number of something I could google so that I can find one and fix it up .

Thanks,

Andy

The sickle mowers already mentioned IH balance head, JD #5 work good on an M. The JD 8 and 38 would probably also work good, just harder to mount. Any pull type rotary mower that's not too big would also work just be sure to use an overrunning clutch on your pto shaft. Just google pull type rotary mower or pull type bush hog. Lee

Get an IH balanced head trailer mower. 100 or 1100. Or the fully mounted version 110 or 1110.

Or a semi mount balanced head, 120 or 1120.

Or are you looking for a bush hog type rotary mower?

The previously mentioned IH mower is correct but a JD #5 mower would be easier to find most likely and is extremely similar. I suspect, although I have never bought the IH mower, that the JD version will be cheaper. I routinely have bought the JD mowers for less than $50 in very good to reasonable condition. Easily adapted to an M (that's what I use), the only complaint I have is that I hate putting them on the tractor. If you buy one, get one with the quick connect arms on it. I have a piece of heavy steel plate with a piece of round steel welded to the edge that I mount on the drawbar of the M and attach the mower to. I made up a longer PTO drive shaft too but this is easily done and the new one is a lot easier to get off the tractor. Another benefit...no one is likely to trespass and walk off with it! Most gosh darned awkward thing to move that I ever saw!

The IH 27v was the mower made for the M and H. Good sickle bar mower. I had one with a 7 foot blade. Was using a tractor without live power and had trouble cutting some thick hay. Took the 5 ft. cutterbar off a IHC No. 9 horse drawn mower and put it on the27v. Worked fine.

Been mowing for about 15 years now with tractors that don"t have live PTO. Started with a Farmall A with 100 pull type and upgraded to my H with the mounted 1110 above. NEVER had a problem with any of them. I actually prefer them over the 544 with live PTO... live PTO is for combines and balers.

The non live power didn't have anything to do with that 7 footer not working good. It was out of time or in bad shape. I pull 7 footers with Super C's and almost never have a problem with them. Have mowed thick hay with an M and 7 foot 100 series and No 31 pitman mowers with no problems.
