I got a used oil pan supposedly from an M to replace the smashed one I have. It has what looks like a short dipstick that fits where the oil check valve should be. What would the pan be off of or was there a dipstick avail aftermarket?

I bought one off ebay earlier this year. I think I paid about $60 for it. That's a lot for a dipstick, but my H is my "toy". third party imagethird party imagethird party image

Back in the '1960's my Dad and I got ine of those oilpan dipsticks from TSC and installed it. Much better than the petcocks. The only better way to check oil would be to drill a hole in the flat spot on the right hand side of the engine just above the oilpan (about where the dipstick is on the 400}. Has anybody added one of these dipsticks and where did you get the parts? Armand

Oh shoot yes. That dipstick is a very sought after add-on. The last one I sold brought big $ Way more than you paid for the pan.

Perhaps pan is a U6/replacement? Posting awhile back noted later U engines had dipsticks, replacement pans from IHC for U,W, and rowcrops were usually the dipstick type. RN

Bob - I gotta believe that dipstick is an aftermarket device.

My wife's dad has a Super H and pair of Super M's - all purchased new in 1953-54. All 3 are equipped with small dipsticks in place of the upper petcocks and pipe plugs the lower petcock openings.
