PTO will not run. The shifter pin is wore almost in half. In order to see the transmission clutch shaft should i split the tractor at the front or at the back? Or do i have to split it at all and just replace the shifter pin ?

thanks

Oren

Oren, There are several things that can happen to the Cub PTO shaft to make it not stay engaged. There have been several posts in the past about this, so you may want to search for them. If the shifter pin that slides the spline into the transmission thru shaft is worn, it may slip out. It should be a round pin. If it isn't round or the llinkage is bent you may need a new one or repair it. Slipping out can be bad as on mine, this damaged the splines on the transmission thru shaft. This shaft runs all the way from the engine thru the transmission to the PTO. If that shaft is damaged, you need to split the tractor to change it. You can split the tractor just in front of the transmission and then take the shaft out. New shafts are available on the Cub web site for around $100 (I know as I just bought one). Roger

Go to Farmall Cub.com and click on the Cub forum. Ask the same question and you will get very good info from some experts.

I haven't been inside a Cub tranny, but from the drawings, etc., the only reason I can see for having to split it would be if you had to lift the spline shaft out to make any repairs. Your PTO shaft rides in a bushing at the back of the spline shaft, and so should slide out the rear with the PTO and wouldn't require lifting the spline shaft at least for a look-see. It appears from the drawings that the shifter for the PTO hooks up behind the wall in the case, so I'm not sure whether you would be able to see it by lifting the transmission shifter and cover.

Where is this shifter pin?

shifter pin slides into the clutch on the pto shaft and pushes into the transmission clutch shaft putting the pto in gear. MJy promblem was the pto quick running. apparently the clutch wad sliding back off the transmission shaft. I dont know iam just quessing

IF you're confident you can line the shifgearshift back up, try lifting the tranny cover and see waht you can see, but it looks like you'll have to frain the tanny and go inthrough the back.

You'll need to split it only if the repair requires lifting the spline shaft, and I don't think it will. It may be tight working from the back, but if it can be done from there (or the top) I can't see where you'll gain a thing by splitting the machine.
