a little help IDing a planter?

Hey all,

I'm looking at cleaning up my grandfathers place a little bit and would appreciate a little help identifying a 2 row planter.

It looks very similar to the one I found on ebay and posted as a link. The one I'm trying to ID has fertilizer boxes in the middle and disc openers instead of shoes. Grandpa hasn't used it for as long as I remember and, as far as I know, it's been shedded all it's life. The opening disks are really loose and the fertilizer boxes are getting thin.

I guess what I'd like to know is model number and how much I should ask for it. An Amish gentleman recently bought some potato equipment from me and offered me 185 for the planter.

Thanks for any help.

We had a big discussion about these a couple months back. I don't remember exactly, but it may be a number 8. Post a thread to Roosty as he has one just like that, and may have more info on it. As to value I have no clue. Might check the archives and find something.

Thanks George. I'll look around for a picture of a number 8 and see if it matches.

BTW,
I saw one go at auction last summer, not nearly as nice as mine for $450

I also saw a pair of intact fertilizer boxes go for $175 for the pair.. I stopped bidding at $150.

Seems they don't bring jack via ebay though...

Roosty, you should call Brad Marshall at 1-888-824-0544. He probably has the old style metal fertilize boxes. I am guessing they would be around 100 to 150 each, but don't know for sure.

Thanks George,

It is one of those projects that i'll get to this winter or something. I have a pretty sizable machine and fab shop on the other side of my office door... It'll give the guys something to do when they are a bit slow...

it isn't a #8. it is somewhere in the 230ish numbers for model.. I have not found a specific manual for it yet. The planter is very similar to the earlier 202 / 204 / 206 planter except those are still setup for horse drawn.
Once you get into the 240 series planters the drill shaft and drive mechanisms on the planter boxes are totally different. The frame is also a bit different and though the holes look the same as earlier models the row spacing / setting is different both in the frame and on the markers.

these planters came in 3 versions, check row, drill and hill drop. You could also get a whole slew of different options.

If you need I have a 202 / 204 / 206 manual I could photo copy, though it is for a horse drawn model it is more or less the same as mine as far as setup goes. I also have a manual kindly sent to me from a fellow member here that is close but a bit different... I use it for work and knowledge for the trip mechanism.
My planter was also used by my grandfather for a few decades. It is a drill and planted sweet corn for me in the spring. I also have a fertilizer framework and bases just need to make some new boxes and other small parts that have rotted away.

That definately looks like the planter I have, the only difference being I have disc openers and fertilizer boxes. Also, I think my planter box lids are flat but I can't picture them exactly.

Looks like I'll have to take and post a picture of it to get a more accurate lock on the model number. There wouldn't happen to be a spot on the planter where they put a model number...?

I'm on the fence on whether or not to sell this. My grandpa never talked about it and it always sat in the back of the shed so it must not have had any sentimental value to him. It may have just been sitting there from a lack of ambition to move it out. On the other it may have been sitting there because he saw value in it and wanted to keep it.

Thanks a lot, Rootsy.
