This tractor seems to be locked in one speed. It will go forward and reverse with the speed selection gear in neutral or to the left and up. All the other positions result in a stall. I can not find a speed gear selection pattern in operators manual or IT repair manual. Any advice would be appreciated, also if anyone knows the shift pattern. Thanks Carl

The page out of the caseih.com parts diagram shows no pump.
A filter should not be in the line, (a gravity system filter is bigger and can be purchased at NAPA). Take it out and see if it works! JimN

My 544 utility does that off and on. The transmission is engaging in two gear speeds at once. Like the earlier post said, the sheet metal has to come off right below the dash. Then with a screw driver you can "pop" up or down one of those shifting rods. The rods have the clevis on each end. With the shifter in neutral the shifting rods all line up in the center position. I have found that plenty of oil on the hortizontal shaft you will see in there helps prevent this problem. In fact it just doesn't happen. Move them up and down. Find the center position. Line them all up in the center. Good luck.

Shift pattern on a 544 gear drive without the Forward/Reverse looks like this-

R 2 4 1 3 5

I would bet that your's is the same, but the reverse position is probably omitted. It sounds like the Forward/Reverse part is working OK, but your main transmission is stuck in a gear. Remove the large battery box cover under the steering column between the clutch and brake pedals. Remove battery. You'll then see the external shift linkage. There will be three upper arms, three rods, and three lower arms. With the gearshift lever in nuetral (centered) they should all line up with eachother. If one is up or down, try to move it back to center by hand. Do this on level ground with the Forward/Reverse lever in nuetral, and be ready to get out of the way if it starts rolling. Your external linkage may need to be gone through, they were known for this sort of problem. Case-IH may still offer a rebuild kit with updated parts.
