International 444 fuel flow issue

My 444 started acting up yesterday - I think it's a fuel flow issue but am looking for opinions.

Tractor started/ran fine then quit while I was going straight up a fairly steep hill. Rolled down, restarted, everything OK. Then, about an hour later, when doing brush mowing, it started to cut out, initially this happened on uphill runs but eventally on level ground too. When it quits, I give it a few minutes and it fires right up but won't keep running for long. I can prolong the engine quitting by pulling full choke - but it eventually dies.

Any suggestions n where to start? Clogged line? Fuel pump? A related issue is that fact that not so long ago the fuel line was replaced and it's a rubber line - not the hard line. Filter shows fuel being fed - at least as far as the filter. Thanks.

Thanks for the replies - here's an update.

I verified the coil is good - lots of spark going in there. I also cleaned out the fuel line from the tank and verified no blockage.

I think I'm on to something after Owen tipped me off - I don't believe I have a fuel pump. Sounds stupid - but I don't think it's there. The fuel line goes direct from the tank to a filter then into the carb. When it quits, I can see that it's not feeding into the filter. I have a picture but don't think I can attach on this site.

In any case - can you guys verify that I should have a fuel pump and maybe help with the routing? I think that's my next guess.

Thanks for the help. I'm a new guy to old tractors.

Doug

I would take out the filter, that filter is not designed for gravity systems. JimN

Is the fuel pump stopping? You should hear it slowly pulse whenever the ignition switch is on. If it starts to pulse rapidly you are not building fuel pressure.

Start at the fuel tank and check for flow. It must flow fuel like flowing through a sweetheart straw. If less, it is plugged up.
There is a strainer in the carb intake fitting as well as other places.
If the lines are OK, then pull off the float bowl and (with a pan under it) gently hold up the float and turn on the fuel. Lowering the float should produce drastic flow, if not, the inlet is plugged up. Good luck. As pointed out by Bob, the coil could be an issue. If it restarts immediatly but dies I go for fuel first. Check for spark when it quits. A bad coil will act as you describe.

Re: International 444 fuel flow issue - Success! in reply to Bob, 10-14-2007 08:26:52
Guys - thanks for the tips and suggestions.

I went to the local IH parts supplier (Baraboo Power Equipment - Baraboo WI), and looked over their schematic - then purchased an aftermarket fuel pump because mine was missing! Yes, that's it - I feel pretty stupid. In any case, I was able to mount it pretty easily and once I fired it up the problem is gone.

Thanks for the help - especially the tip about the fuel pump.
