What does everyone do for pitting due to rust? It is on steel, not the sheet metal. The last owner just painted everything with scraping or fixing problems so now it is red painted pitting.

I use a HEAVY duty rotary wire brush on a medium speed Electric or air driven angle grinder. Then a rust killer to get the final bits(You all know the little sons that I mean)Wash it with general purpose synthetic thinners, make sure you've got all the old dust off, and then brush paint with a moderatly thinned high build primer.Brushing on the steel castings wont show much brushmark if you only thin enough to keep the brush moving. Then rub it down to get a smooth well primed surface to spray on.Or if you are going to brush paint the final coat just carry on once the primer has cured(not just dried) Oh before I forget--it takes forever luck mike farmer

Electrolysis tank to remove the rust and a body filler from the auto supply if you want a smooth finish on your paint. Paint cannot hide pitting.
If there is an issue with flash rust after the tank you can get phosphoric (sp?) acid solutions that are painted on which can help with this. Sandblasting seems to make the best paintable surface but I don't like it on pitting as I can never be sure I got it all.

For heavily pitted surfaces where the pitting does not exceed about .030", I use unthinned epoxy primer and then sand. If you can't get it out of your gun, it can be heated to lower its viscosity. No, it won't congeal in your gun. At least not Dupont's high build Corlor epoxy primer. I think they are all pretty much the same between brands.

Some of that high build primer can be bought in spray cans and it is not cheap but works very well. Also some autobody fillers require primer before use so red pits are not a problem.
