I have a "41 H (6V system). Several years ago I replaced the starter switch when it stopped working. Now its happened again. Is there any reason why the switch should go bad after only a few hunderd starts?

I also tried jumping the circuit across the terminals on the back of the switch, but didn"t have much luck.

Comments or suggestions?

Thanks all - I"ll take your suggestions to heart. I did buy a new switch as I had no choice but to get the tractor started this weekend. However, I"ll have the starter looked at this week before I burn out another switch. I "ll also get my hands on the starter draw meter first.

The comment to push the starter hard is interesting to me. I"ve been around all types of machines all my life (basic to ultrasophisticated) and the rule was always firm but gentle. I"ll try to be a bit firmer on the button from here on out.....

Two items. When pushing the switch, shove it in hard and hold it firmly. Gentile on the switch allows the contacts to arc and burn. Full hard pressure reduces contact heating.
Get a starter draw meter from a parts store. they are cheap and easy to use. If your starter draws more than 450 amps, it needs to be rebuilt with new bushings, and checked for shorts.

If you jumped the sw that says the starter or else you need new 1ga cables. You can get a new starter without core charge for 130 then i will bet it will start.

the problem might not be in the switch.
some of the the lugs, for the brushes in the starter, are soldered. sometimes the solder gets hot and melts and runs out of the connection.
thus hard cranking or no crankingat all.
i had this problem with my H a few years ago.
hope this helps.
good luck.

A lot of time when the starter gets weak it takes out that switch first because the starter draws to many amps for the switch so the switch burns out. I would have the starter checked before I would replace the switch
