John: Don't have the exact date, somewhere around mid 1963. We might be able to narrow it down, mine has the 04-06 grill and is serial number 22157. Near as I can tell it happened only a few hundred before that. Where does yours fit in.

I've seen what folks claimed to be 62 with the 04-06 type grill. Even saw one guy claimed was 64 with the 40-60 type grill. These are definitely wrong, mid 63 is the time.

Hugh, parts book says the change happened at 23301, which would be a '63. About 5 or 6 years ago there was an article in Red Power magazine about this. It said that there was a change-over period, and that some machines built during that time have the 06 style grille while still using the oval-shaped "140" emblems. I suspect you've got a change-over tractor, or that they didn't exactly keep track of what serial number the change was made at.

KB: Kind of curious, just what changed at serial number 23301. Here we have John with serial number 229xx and 40-60 type grill, and my tractor at 22157 with 04-06 grill. My tractor also has adhesive type decals with model badge same shape as all other 04-06 tractors. It's not just a matter of changing decals and grill insert either. All the sheet metal around the radiator is different.

When I got my tractor 4 years ago, I wondered had the sheet metal been changed. Shortly after that I replaced the radiator, water pump and a few minor items. I belive it was factory, just basing that on paint over spray, bolts and other fasteners, radiator hoses, clamps, etc.

John: Don't let the yellow paint throw you off, IH was using yellow primer in those days. It happened with 140, 240, 304, 404 and 504, possibly others. We had a guy on here 3 weeks ago, had a SC with a 240 wide front, he was stymied by the yellow paint on the front end.

If you wish to check if your tractor is all original, go to the casting date codes. they are didgets about 38" to 1/2" high, with what looks like a round head, blade type screw between each of day, month and year. The code goes day and month by number and year by letter. Each major casting on the tractor will have it's own date code. Most castings were cast about 1 to 4 months before tractor was built. if you engine block, torque tube, transmission case and hydraulic system fall within months of each other you can count on it being an original tractor. A is 1955, B is 1956, C is 1957, etc. you can go from there.
