Age old question, do I keep the 6 volt system or do I convert to 12 volt like all of my car and truck buddies say. I am rebuilding my grandfather's 44' H and it has not ran since 1994. Should I dare use the old magneto. I assume I will need to use new plugs, wires, distibuter cap???? Any suggestions are appreciated!!!

I say keep it 6V. Besure the battery cables are the very heavy gauge and all connections are shiny bright and clean. If it was stored inside I would say the old wiring, plugs cap ect should be ok as long as they were good when it was parked. The points may have to be cleaned though. My 51 H I kept 6V and all connections are clean and it cranks over like crazy. If I plug the exhaust pipe and crank it, the tractor flips over! (Just kidding there!)

I had to laugh at the last one!!! I did read where 6 volt cables need to be heavier. I'll try just to clean the points, when I disassembled it last winter, the plugs and wires may have found the trash. Have everything else though. I see what I can do and ask more questions later.

Andy: As Bob said, big cables (00 or 01 guage) and good connections and 6 volts will crank any pre 1958 Farmall gasser for starting in any weather. I have two tractors with 12 volt conversions and one 6 volt, and if 3 of us went to my shop on a cold Canadian winter morning, the guy that chooses the 6 volt Super A will be out the door ahead of the 12 volt 130 and 140. I will stand by that in temps as cold as -40. I once started a 6 volt Farmall 300, unassisted by any boost, block heater, etc at -40, about the 3rd turn of the engine it was going.

I don't know that I can warm up to your mag ign quite as easily. Bear in mind I'm not a well versed mag person. Watched my dad hand crank a W4 most of one afternoon back around 1948. After he milked his cows that evening, walking by the W4 he gave it one more try, first flip of the crank it was going. After a few more experiences like that, the IH was beckoned to our place to install distributor ign. I was 6 at the time, thus rather limited experience.

After reading your post, I might have a distibutor because I do not see a condenser. I might try to take a picture of the set up and see if you guys can tell me what I got. I do appreciate the 6 volt confidence, I will 99% go with 6 volt. Most tractor guys tell me volt is the way to go. Thanks fellas.

If you have a distributor you should have an external auto type coil. The coil on a mag is
mounted inside the mag. Hal

I did figured out that I have a generator which means I have 6 volt. Right? Also I think I will replace my wires and plugs, I AM going to try to use my old points and (distributor??) cap. It may get interesting in the old barn one night. Thanks a bunch guys

An easy way to tell if its using positive ground
and you your battery has 3 caps. Hal
PS: Post a picture of the mag or distributor.
