My farmall m has 2 way hydraulics. I need to know how they work because right now it doesnt work. It will push cylinder out fine, but it wont suck back in. So really, I have one way hydraulics. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

It is not live hydraulics. It is two way because there are two hoses going to the back and there is a second lever to operate it. It is the christmas tree type. I have a ten foot disc I pull with it. I can only use the weight of the disc to get the disc down. The hydraulics will not compress the piston, they will only push it out. The little lever beneath the rod doesnt move.

That is the type mine has, and it does pull the cyl back in but my system runs off the Belhen PS pump instead of the belly pump but it shouldn"t matter. I have 3 point that it runs. I am not sure what the little lever below the main lever is for, mine seems to never move either outside of flopping loose if I move it by hand. I would suspect that there may be a problem in the top part of the valve where the main lever is. I am not sure where to get parts for those and I have a feeling IH doesn"t have them anymore. Does your main lever have slop in it?

No, not that I can notice. It seems to be tight.

Let's see if you really have 2-way hydraulics, first. Assuming you have belly pump hydraulics.

To have 2-way on your M, you must have a separate 2-way valve. The lever on the side of the tractor's belly is NOT 2-way.

There are the "christmas tree" valves from IH that were optional on Ms. The valve mounts under the gas tank, on the fill pipe for the belly pump reservoir. A long rod runs up to the operator. You lock back the belly lever, and use the lever to the christmas tree valve to operate the cylinder.

There are also aftermarket "spool" valves. These could be mounted anywhere, but usually somewhere near the operator. They look like the valve on top of a log splitter. Again, you lock the belly lever back and use the spool valve to control the cylinder.

In either case, you run a hose from the right-hand belly hydraulic port to the IN port on the valve.
On christmas tree valves, the OUT is already connected to the fill pipe on the belly reservoir. On a spool valve, you need to run a hose from the OUT to the fill pipe on the reservoir. Either way, you need to plug the vent in the cap, or replace the cap with a regualar pipe cap to keep the fluid from spraying out.

Run lines from the two work ports on either type of valve to quick connects at the rear of the tractor.

I have the IH christmas tree type on my M. The lever on top of the valve is getting a bit sloppy and I sometimes have some trouble getting it to go up or down. You might check that out if you have that type.

If the cylinder is a two way it will have two hoses going to it. One connected at the bottom of the cylinder to push the piston out and the other at the top to push it back in. If this is what you have you may just have air in the return line. Does the M have live hydraulics? If not then you need to lock the control rod for the on-board hydraulics in the pulled out position. This is true for extending the cylinder and for retracting it.

Dalton, we need a little more info on your problem. Tractor must have double acting valve to work both ways. If it just has live hydraulics and no double acting valve one way is all you wil have. Let us know what type pump and valve set up you have.
