I have a Farmall 656 Diesel (not hydro-stat) 1966 - Ser#19928; When it's cold I could turn the wheel until I'm blue in the face and the tires don't turn. In warm weather, it's difficult, but manageable. It's a pretty complicated hydraulic/power steering/hand pump/separator value set up, and I have no idea which one to replace. I'm not an expert mechanic by any means, but I'm considering replacing the hydraulic and power steering pump. Can anyone help me hedge my bet because neither are cheap. Thanks in advance for any help. :)

Will the wheels turn with the engine off (manual steering)?

You'd have to be the HULK to turn the wheels, but it's possible but VERY VERY HARD! Is that a good clue for something?

I'm waiting for the filter to come in, but before I did anything I wanted to check the Hydraulic Pressure BEFORE any changes so I have a base line. I just assumed I would buy a 3000-5000 psi pressure gauge and plug it into the remote on the tractor. My uncle seems to think that might not work, and he has no idea of the pressure, it may be over 5000 psi. Will plugging into the remote work? Do you have an idea of what the pressure should be? And if I can't test it on the remote, where do you test it? Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks in advance.
Shawn...

This is a good thing; rules out that manual pump. :>)

When was the last time you changed that hydraulic filter? Does the hydraulics scream at ya (by-passing)? Steering is the first to go with a plugged filter.

Also, like someone else said put a load on the remotes to see if ya have a good pump or not.

Jack the tractor up to take the weight off the front end. Does it still turn as hard with the engine off?

As in: something binding mechanically.

I just got the tractor Saturday at an auction. I did a power wash and everything seems really good except the power steering. I've never replaced the hydralics; YET! Changing the fluids was the first order of business after I get it all ready for a good paint job, including filters etc. I haven't jacked up the front end, but I noticed the Bolster Pivot Pin was in bad shape and that was my first priority. Ordered a new one today. When I have it up off the ground, I'll check the steering with no weight on it. I doubt it's mechanical though, because the steering wheel turns and turns and turns when it's COLD WEATHER (snowed saturday), and works fine when it was 60 degrees today. It's HARD, but the wheels connect when you turn RIGHT, doesn't do so well when you turn LEFT. Or vice-versa, I can't remember, but it does seems to work better in one direction than the other.

Had a combine one time that just flat locked up on me right in the middle of bean harvest. 'Bout drove me crazy.

Turned out to be nothing more than dirt and muck buildup in one of the knees.

Dunno, your problem really sounds like it needs a fluid/filter change. 'Spose that rear end is half full of water?

That cold/hot thing just smacks of a plugged filter. Hope ya get 'er figured out,

Allan

Shawn The Vet is right, but the 656 has 2 pumps one for the power steering and remote hydraulics and one for the hitch. So if the remote hydraulics work ok the pump should be good.

The 656 will only have two pumps if they have a rockshaft. The power steering woks off of a flow control valve in front of the steering wheel and behind the fuel tank on the right side.

With out the proper test equipment or at least a high pressure gauge your spitting in the wind as it could be something simple like a stuck valve that could be cleaned up or a pressure reg. stuck open . Working on Hyd.'s is like tryen to work on a new car or truck with out a scan tool. If you don't have the basics of hyd.'s ya may be ahead of the game by having someone that does run a check on it and then repair or replace what is wrong . Running a flow rate on the pumps will tell fast if it is the pumps.

Very good advice! Thank you both. I'll have someone with the right tools look at it for me before purchasing anything.
