I didn't want to hijack his thread, but your response to his question on his gen piqued my interest. Between getting one old tractor running in good order again, and getting the workhorse squared away before winter, I've been dealing with generator/charging issues.

Can you correct me where I'm misunderstanding.

Assuming a three-stud cut-out relay with a four-position switch on the ammeter panel. Is the resistor at the switch eating amperage or voltage?

Going the other way (I ask because I have one of each) a four-stud regulator and a three position switch, I assume the reistance to a charge is the second coil in the regulator???

And if I read you right is the following a good way to look at it?? . . . realizing that the generator loses efficiency as it heats up, does it put out a constant voltage at any temp, implying that the temp affects only amps or wattage, given vA=W?

Q1} the resistor limits the flow of current in the field. It is not sensitive to voltage, but it effectively reduces the appied voltage to reduce amps.

You are correct on the second issue. JimN
