wow my 3414 died checked the normal reasons , noticed
the coil was hot real hot. was putting out small
spark, moments later wires going to at from it burned right up. smoke also coming from dis.
checked points. plastic parts of points melted
also. points and condenser were about 3 wks old. the 3414 was converted to 12 by preveous owner
yrs ago. he didnt use a resister, used a ford coil from a junk yard. not sure of voltage. i tried to put the old points back in and started
the melt down again. i bought a new coil with built in resister from napa, (ic14) waiting for new points to come in .

points of interest he ran a wire from bat to
a on off switch, from there to positive on coil.
he didnt run any wires from the #1 terminal at the alt.

one more thing, can i remove the ammeter
and replace it with a volt meter. how would this
affect wiring??

It sounds like a "one terminal" alternator, and if it's working, and "exciting" at a decent RPM, you're OK the way it is.

Leave the ammeter in place, and add a voltmeter, if that's what you think you need.

The voltmeter only requires a ground, and a source of battery voltage that is switched on and off by the ignition switch.

It's a "totally different animal" than an ameter, in that the charging current does NOT pass though the voltmeter on it's way to the battery, which is how an ammeter is set up. So, you CAN'T substitute one for the other without wiring changes.

it has 3 terminals at the alt but is reduced to
two threw the harness. will leave as is then. any ideas as to why the melt down????
thanks bob

I can guess at why the coil melted down and so much current flowed through the points -

Chances are the coil should have had a resistor or a resistance wire in series from the battery source, so without the resistance to limit the current in the coil windings to a safe value, the heat generated started to cook the insulation off the copper wires inside. The coil has layers of copper wire with thin insulation. If the wire gets too hot the insulation fails and the layers of wire all start to progressively short to each other and what you end up with is nearly a direct short from one coil terminal to the other. Then your battery is effectively connected almost directly to the points and when they close enough current flows to melt wires and get the points hot also. Lucky it didn't catch fire.

All 12v Ford coils were designed to be used with a resistor (on the cars the pink wire from the key in the wiring loom was a resistance wire and warmed up in use ((not bright to my way of thinking)). That coil will eventually burn out and get hot from ever decreasing resistance from internal shorts. Eventually the input will short enough to cause massive current rise , melting wires an points. The condenser is probably OK. JimN
