I bought a farmall A two weeks ago. It was running ruff, like it was missing. I drained the gas, put a new carburetor on, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and still nothing. It runs great when it is pulling but otherwise it"s ruff. Also there is a lot of smoke coming out of the oil cap. What do you think is the problem? What should I do?
Thanks

If Gene's results are OK uniform compression of about 90 or more psi, the next thinking is timing. If it has a Mag (not points and coil/distributor) the roughness might be somewhat normal. Adjust the mixtures at both idle and high speed to finess the mixture (A look at the parts layout caseih, com search for parts, is a good place to start for the location of adjustment screws. The archives here also detail how to do it. Carburetor adjustment. A distributor will adjust spark timing to engine speed. JimN

I would run a compression check first. Dont realy care about how high the reading is just how the readings are even from one cycl to the others.
