Hey guys,

I got my oil pressure line all sorted out, did an oil change on it while I was in there since it lost quite a bit. I made sure the oil level was at full, ran it for a couple short bursts and verified the level all checked out ok, fired it back up to get back to work on my hydraulics and it was running great, went to close my grapple and the engine immediately shut down. Tried to restart and it won't even crank, the starter is trying to turn it but it won't turn over, is it possible to sieze an engine that has oil and coolant in it? Or did something else go wrong? Please help cuz I am really scared right now. :(

Hi Brian, Since you were using the hydralics my first guess would be timing gears. I would take the plugs out, put it on gas and try to turn it backwards, if it frees right up it is probably the pump gear. Good luck, Chuck

I would try to see if the engine can be moved by hand cranking. If you can not get it to move I would drain the oil and look for metal particles, then pull the pan and look for a seized bearing.
Make a note when removing those bearing caps so they can be reinstalled correctly. Hal

How do I go about hand cranking? With the lifted wheel technique?

You can pull the sparkplugs and the starter and see if you can move the engine by prying on the ring gear. It may have spun a bearing. Hal

How bad is this and how much work to fix?

Did you have oil pressure after changing the oil and filter? See if the engine can be turned backwards as Chuck suggested. If its the timing gear it will still involve a good bit of work
just to get to the timing gear. You will need a good manual that covers the 450D. If you decide to tackle this you need to take notes and pictures
during the teardown. Hal

Hal,

YEs I did have oil pressure after the oil change, it started out at about 30 psi and worked it's way up to 50ish PSI, unfortunately at the moment it stopped I was not looking at the oil pressure guage, of course I will tackle it, I have seen that I can do things with this tractor, it is just unfortunate about the onslaught of winter.

Perhaps Hal I should just mail you a plane ticket and you can just move here and be my "Tractor" dad :) Life would be so much easier that way :)

It is a 450D, the oil that was in it was not even old, but I sprung a leak off my pressure guage outlet, drained the oil put all new oil and filter in, there was no coolant in the oil. Possibly picked up some crub in the change and restricted the pickup of oil? It stopped dead in its tracks, no smoke, no overheating, just kind of made a ping noise and shut off. What should I check first? Should I jack up a rear wheel and try to turn it that way?

If there was enough coolant in the oil for a long enough period of time,it might have damaged a bearing and seized the engine.

Start by trying to turn the engine over by hand first,if it won't even do that much, drop the oil and the pan,see whats up.

You didn't mention what model your tractor was.
