Took the H for a drive

I put rear tires on the H Sunday. Installed a radiator and water pump on Thursday afternoon and took it for a drive. All the gears appear to work and it runs pretty good for having a hole in the carb float. Hopefully I have a good float in another carb. That's 3 down and 1 to go from the sale on September 1. I will probably restore the Super M I bought. I will have to disassemble the motor and rebuild it, so I thought I might as well paint it too. "I love it when a plan comes together." On a side note, How much would a Super M LP be worth in good running condition. Located in Illinois. I had never heard of one before this one. Asking price is $1800. I know we should just buy it. The head should bring 12-1500. I was curious though what it is worth. Thanks, Lee

This is Hi to Lee Cramsey. Refering to the 'up in age' gentleman you spoke of with $40,000 of IH spares. I am desperate for a set +040" crankshaft bearing for a Farmall M. Could you check this out with him or put me in touch. (I could regrind to +050 or +060)Mike Farmer

There are so many LP M's and Super M's around central California that it makes it hard for me to believe it wasn't a factory built option.

Lee, to the best of my knowledge, there were no factory LP Ms or SMs thus (I think) the odds are it has a gasoline head on it. That does not make it a bad deal, just not a """find""" JimN

Jim,
I have not seen this unit yet. Brother-inlaw told me about it last night on the way home from work. I suggested we go look at it. The owner is an ex- IH mechanic and up in age. He said he probably still has $ 40,000 in parts in his old shop. Of course I immediately suggested we meet with him and "strike a deal" for the parts. Not likely to be able to afford them though, but still nice to look. I will see if we can view this Super M and check it out further. Thanks, for the input.
Lee

Jim, Not to dispute when I don't know the answer myself. After my last post I went to tractor data.com and they do list an LP M and also have a Nebraska test result for LP. I will investigate further.

Super M's were tested at Nebraska, regular M's were not in LP version. So LP Super M's must have left the factory that way or they wouldn't have tested them. I'm not saying every LP SM came from the factory that way but it could have.

I stand corrected, Check the head casting # to be sure the head is the desirable one, that was my concern. JimN
