I have seen on post here that 6 volt will work fine if you have heavy enough battery cables and everything is in good order. A friend does commercial roofing work and brought home some scrap from a job site. He was going to the salvage yard with it and I talked him out of a pair of 3 foot long cables. They have factory ends on them and are marked as follows. 2/0 AWG 600V Welding cable A.I.W Corp. Are these suitable for substitute battery cables for my 6V H? They are even colored right red and black.

Thanks in advance, Gene

They will make fine battery cables, I would solder the battery lugs when making new cables. Hal

Hal, These already have factory ends made on them, but both ends have just and eye, like where you would ground it to the frame. I will have to cut one end off and put on a lug. I never thought of soldering it on, but I can do that. I am probably about a year away from that stage anyway.

Thanks, Gene

You can ground it anywhere on the tractor, but you need to remove any paint or rust so you have a good ground. I wouldn't make the cables any longer than necessary. Clean those lugs until shiny too. Hal

I always recommend 00 Gauge cables for 6 volt systems cuz if youre only starting with 6 volts in the first place you sure dont wanna drop any voltage across small more resistive light gauge wimpy cables and waste energy n heat when its put to better use in cranking that starter..... . Welding cables are made up more of fine stranded wires for better flexibilty and Im sure they have good quality heat resistive insulation.
