Every point in the system can have play. The "U" joint near the gauges have been known to have looseness in the jointcaps, and in the connections to the shafts.
The worm and sector in the gear box are quite often found with no oil (or grease if the oil leaked out) and Some can be flipped if they are 360 degree gears not 180 degree. The upper and lower pivot points for the steering shavt in the bolster often have play, and require the bushings to be pressed out, and possibly the shaft welded up and turned down to spec. YOurs is way better than some. I've seen 3/4 turn of freeplay!!! Good luck there are many posts on this sight (search for) that will assist. also ask us questions, and tell us your success. JimN
