After working on this deal for ahile I now have the bottom dollar the owner will accept. It is 1958 350 Farmall diesel (continental 193 engine) with single front, fast hitch, factory power steering. The sheet metal is straight and the TA appears to be OK but have not tried to push it real hard since the owner did not want me to take it out on low side before I committed to buy it. It is missing the lights and needs a new battery box seat support. The motor sounds good, the rear tires are poor and the starter needs redone. The owner wants 2500 dollars. Is that about right or too high. How many of the Farmall 350 diesels were made and how much have you seen them going for. We never have one come up for sale here so I'm in the dark. It does have a very nice set of front frame weights on it also. Thanks for any help here Migraine

Migraine, Engine rebuild kits are around 2000 to 2200 bucks for the 193. That doesn't include fuel system, machine, or head work. New Valves are not available for them. They are great old tractors though. I used my for plowing, disking, mowing, hay baling and all sorts of jobs. I realy like it to pull the two row tobacco setter with. Will pull the setter for more than 2 days on a tank of fuel. Holds 17 gallon.

The owners worry may be beacuse He/She doesn"t use it and is not willing to let others mess it up either (but who knows for sure) drive it in road gear starting in TA reduction, and rapidly moving the lever forward.
Try stopping in low gear with the TA forward, up a slight incline that will allow it to roll backwards. If it does not roll backwards with the clutch pushed in all the way, the TA needs adjustment. If the pedal needs to be pushed 2/3 of the way to allow coasting backwards, it is correct. JimN

Thanks JimN: That quick test of the TA was just the thing I've been wondering about. Thanks. agpilot

If the owner wont let you operate the T/A before buying it-I wouldnt walk away I would run.Every tractor Ive sold I told the folks to drive it first and placed no restrictions on them-well stay within eyesight(LOL)

Doesn't this set a red flag off in your head? George is the only one that caught it. If he doesn't want you to use it, it's bad. Doug N

It may well be bad, but the condition of the engine is of MUCH greater concern. I am not an IH man, but I dare say I'd rather fix the TA than to do an extensive rebuild on the engine. $2500 for a GOOD 350 diesil doesn't sound bad to me. However, the TA situation is more than fishy.

I have a '57 with a good TA and no power steering and FH.We use it all the time, especially plowing in spring.Plenty of power for what we are doing with it.It has a block heater and we have to use it anytime it gets down around freezing. We shelled out 1750 for it in 2000 and then shelled out another 600 for a rebuilt injection pump,so 2500 doesn't seem too bad.Just check for fuel in the oil.I looked at a 55HP Farmtrac this spring.Convinced me to keep using the old farmall after I checked the price.

If the engine is in good shape it is worth that. Engine parts are high priced. 58 models are a little rare. Not many made that year. There was a little more than 4000 row crop Farmall models made. That does not include utilities. The GD 193 is the most fuel effeciant engine I have ever ran in a tractor this size. Also has plenty of power and hold up very well. I have seen one bring 5000 before. That was a very good one with new tires and paint. I would not take that for mine. As for the starting, mine starts good in most weather. If it is above 35 degrees it starts on its own every time with very little cranking on it. They will handle 3 X 14 inch plow in most places. I would check that TA before I gave 2500 for it though. If he doesn't want you to, I would suspect it may be bad. Those front weights are worth 3 or 400 bucks.

Considering the tractor has a few issues, that price would be a tad high for my neck of the woods. But if the engine is good, that alone may add value compared to a gasser since there aren"t many left. Roughly 4000 of the 350 diesels were made, and I think that number includes both the Utilities and Farmalls. You might also want to test the PTO and hydraulics to make sure they are good.

The unit might be 2 or 300 high for the tire issues stated. The engines are economical, and have good durability, they have a manifold heater type start system that is worthless. Pretty cold natured. Ether is a normal tool box accessory. The parts are expensive to buy, but available. We have a neighbor with one (still has it) that has had massive use and one inframe in its hard life. JimN

Hi Jim, I have both a Farmall and utility, would never put either in them. The engine has a relatively lose fit to their very thin sleeves. Put a tank heater on, electricity is cheap.

Thanks for the replies. I think I need to check this thing out a little more carefully before jumping in. Thats why a person needs to ask for advice. Migraine
