Ok, I pulled the valve cover off and was unpleasantly surprised with a little bit of coolant in a couple of the recesses by the valves, it was a minute amount and by no means does it look to have mixed with the oil at all maybe a teaspoon, I also checked my upper rad hose while I was standing on the tractor and noticed a little split in it which I guess if the gasket was not seated correctly or worn out could have caused a little coolant to get in. All of my valves are moving when I crank the engine and nothing appears to be bent or broken. What kind of problem could I potentially be looking at in regards to the coolant? A cracked head or am I making a mounain out of a mole hill? Now that I have it off I know I can use the tune-up specs to adjust the valves can anyone else tell me which of the tractors in the list have the same engine as mine? 264 CID I think as it by emblem is a W450D but has a W400D engine in it. What kind of feeler guage do I need?

Hot will be an issue as I cannot get the tractor started. So should I go maybe .020?

Thanks Jim,

I think I will just replace the rad hose as it is toast anyways. I just got book specs on the valve lash and it is .019 cold I will set it at that and hope it works, they look like they are right together with no gap in it, I will double check the timing while I have the valve cover off as well I can probably get it near smack on that way. I had another helpful guy telling me that he had a similar problem with his tractor backfiring and missing and his distributor was excessively worn so I will check this once I get the top end put back together. I was unable to find a Pressure Tester today so I will check a couple different places tomorrow or I will stop by one of the shops in town and see if I can borrow one.

Putting 6 psi (maximum) into the radiator with a cork/plug th make a seal, will cause coolant to be able to go through cracks and into places that show leaks. If pressurized, the pressure should stay for several hours. Green in the head (unless spilled there is manditory to repair(or stop the leak). Heads on these can crack from hot shutdown, low coolant, and freezing. Rep[air is possible, and done quite often. Good heads are hard to find. Drain a bit of oil out of it to see if any is under the oil in the Crank case. Use a flat feeler gauge to adjust the valves. JimN

Thanks Jim,

I will go out and take a couple pics of the coolant areas, there is no coolant in the oil and it was not mixed in the oil at all there was just 2 small pools of it in 2 of the the bolt recesses. I realize I need to use a flat feeler guage to adjust the valves, I am just not sure where to use the feeler guage. I guess I could just google the procedure for valve adjustment but I prefer learning these things from you guys. If it is a cracked head who would I take it to for repair, or how would I make the repair? I will pressurize the rad and see what I can find, I will have to replace my upper rad hose first though as I am not sure it is totally split or not.

The feeler is placed between the tip of the valve stem, and the rocker arm. A light drag when no twist or bend is on the gauge is perfect feel. Just tape up the hose to keep it from bursting. Duct tape in narrow strips is great.
Do not use more than 6 psi!! Best of luck, JimN

Thank you all very much, now my next question is in regards to the tune-up specs the 450d is not listed on there, anybody know what gap I should set it at?

Watch out for rocker arms which have had the valve stem wear a depression in them. Your feeler gauge can bridge this gap and cause you to set the valve gap much larger than it should be.

If there is a depression in them what is the procedure then? And does anyone know what the clearance should be on a 450D?
