Traveling slow in 2nd gear and engine sound changed a bit, back fired through the exhaust and stoped running. Will not start on gas. Where is the best starting point to look for the problem?

I pulled the valve cover off and the cam is not turning, but the rotor on the mag is. There seems to be a lot of valve clearence, 3/16 of an inch or better on the rockers that are open. How big of a job is it to replace cam gears if that is the problem and are the parts easy to find? Thanks Tim

I'm a bit confused. The MD is a gas start diesel. From what you said, this problem showed up when you were running on the diesel side. I think I'd pull the valve cover and take a look at the starting valve linkage and see if the valve timing is more or less correct.

Sounds like it jumped cam timing. Is it a mag or distibuter? Start by pulling the cap off, and tap it over to #1 compression and see if the rotor lines up with the #1 spark plug wire. If not, then you will have to pull the front of the motor apart to see what let loose. Doug N

I am afaid that it is something like that, when you try to start it you can hear it blowing in the air cleaner. It has a mag. Thanks Tim

Yeah, if you can hear it in the air cleaner, then something let loose. Good luck with it. Doug N
