I'm Sure that Jim has hit the nail on the head on this one. It is fairly common to have this happen. It ruins the front needle brg on the counter shaft and lets the rear of the shaft down so that first speed wont work. To fix you need to take the TA housing out of the tractor and overhaul it.

My guess is that the nut came off of the countershaft in the speed transmission. The way I diagnosis this is to pull the front plug below the constant mesh gear and look for needles out of the front needle bearing. Most of the time when this happens it don't hurt the housing

The problem with not being able to get first gear sounds like a linkage issue. Remove the cowling over the dash and inspect. The reverse idler is about the only thing I can think of off the top of my head that has needle bearings. On the left side of the range transmission, you'll see a large cover, held on by eight 1/2" bolts if memory serves me, remove that cover and you can inspect the idler.

lost needle bearings are most likely from the transmission countershaft.

Check the linkages for excessive wear.

Probably a safe bet to tear the trans down and
see what is wrong.
