I recently acquired a 1951 Cub, but am new to farm tractors. If I want to use 2nd or 3rd gear do I shift it 1-2-3 like a car or do I simply place it in whatever gear and go? The previous owner shifted it like a car but he ground the gears something awful when he did it.

To shift gears. Stop the tractor's forward motion. Wait until the PTO driven equipment stops it's motion. Then shift.

I have a 55'cub,I always put in the gear I wonna run it in and go,sometimes when Im pulling out on to the highway I will shift,it makes the tractor get up to speed faster,I double clutch when Im shifting and it dont grind.

It's not a synchromesh, so to shift on the fly, you need to learn to double-clutch and feel it out.

However, the difference between 1st and 2nd is barely noticeable. 3rd is still slow enough that you can start from a dead stop if your tractor is healthy.

The previous owner didn't know what the heck he was doing. Select a gear and let out the clutch. If you want to change gears I suggest you stop first.

Congrats on your new tractor. We just got a 51 cub also. As far as shifting, just put it in the gear you want and go. Doug N
