I know they are both 123 cid, but they have a few differences. the 240 block is about an inch longer than the head. the SC block is the same length as the head. this may cause clearance problems with the belt tensioner pulley mount. I just got a super C with a broken block, and it came with a 240 utility for parts. my plan is to swap sleeves/crank, ect into the 240 block. has anybody actually done this swap??

I believe that the utility block mounted in the frame different than the Farmalls. The utility blocks I have worked with had mounting holes on the front instead of the sides. I would look at that before I pulled the motors out. Migraine

Migraine: Not hard to see you are a big tractor guy. All 1939 to 1967 IH tractors smaller than the 404, except the Cub, have the same bolt up pattern at the front of the engine. Basically any tractor equipped with C-113, C-123 or C-135 engine, be they Farmall or Utility, all bolt up the same at both ends of the engine.

You didn't think about the fact, none of these have frame rails. 340 Farmall, 330 and 340 Utility having the C-135 also have the same bolt up pattern. Problem with those, crankshaft is not drilled for the smaller tractor pilot bushing. I've never tried it, but it may be that 300 and 350 Utilities use the same pattern. As I understand it 330 Utility is same tractor as 300, just a few inches shorter, due to shorter engine.

I don"t think that the sc sleeves will fit in the 240 block. I have been looking for a good sc block for about a year (it seems like "next week" never comes). Only the sc and sa used the 354 898 R1-4 crankcases. Rebuilding the 240 motor would probably be your best bet.

What is wrong with your block ? An external crack behind the carb is easily repairable. Cracks in the deck that go into the sleeve bores are more of a problem.

There are a bunch of motors that will work in a sc chassis.

the tractor rolled down a hill, hit a tree and broke in half. broke the back of the block and the front of the torque tube. kicker is it a rebuilt engine,so I was thinking about swapping internals into the good block. the deal came with a 240 utility for parts.

Steve: Your best bet is find a block part number 354898 either R1, R2 or R3. Your rebuild parts will all fit that block. Those were used in Super A, Super C, 100 and 200.

After that some minor changes were made that might prevent you from using a 130 or 230 block, and 140 or 240 are out. 140 and 240 use an automotive type water pump on the fan shaft, you may encounter problems trying to match that up. There was a guy on here couple months back, can't remember his exact switch over but the was a hole missing on the 40 series block for mounting the older type pump and ports. If you use the automotive pump it may not match SC shroud and rad.

I have both 130 and 140, never had them both apart at the same time, but have had fan and radiators off both in the past. I'm quite certain the radiator and shroud are different, for the automotive type pump.

our c had an engine swap years back because the block or wheels broke off. the installer had some issue with the radiator shroud, as it's been kissed with a torch. so maybe it isnt' that difficult to match up to newer blocks, just ugly. it has since been broken again. :(
