I have recently purchased an M and it has the M W hand clutch. I recently took it apart and cleaned everything up. The axle seal leaked and got clutch and brakes all gummed up. I am trying to find a way to tighten up the clutch. I do not know how to adjust it. If anyone knows how to do that or could direct me to a site for this info, that would be great. From what I gather M & W is no longer in business and it is hard to find any info on their products.

Well if you pull a bushogg with it, here is what will happen. You come to the end of the field, you shove in the foot clutch, and the tractor keeps going and runs into a tree and the back wheels keep spinning. The built up momentum from the bush hog will keep putting power to the drive train. That is the beauty of the hand clutch, it disconnects the drive train, and the engine can keep supplying power to the PTO. It is a necessity when pulling a baler or mowing with a sickle bar mower. I grew up on these things. I have the original owners manual and service instructions and parts list for this clutch if you need a copy. I also have the number of an outfit in Nebraska that makes new disks for this clutch. It takes three and they want $70 bucks each. Kinda pricey, but if you need them well, you need them.]

Live or independent PTO a "necessity" when using a sickle mower? LOL Been mowing with sickle mowers for about 15 years now and I prefer not to have a live PTO. I'll take my Farmall A or H any day for mowing!

With a baler, the live/independent PTO is useful - also a bush hog or finish mower works better with one... but not a sickle mower.

Overrun Clutch in reply to GeneMO, 09-29-2007 19:39:25
When running a brush hog on the back of one of these old pieces of iron, *ALWAYS* *ALWAYS* *ALWAYS* install an "overrun clutch" on the PTO shaft. They"re maybe $50 and will prevent the brush hog from running the drivetrain. Safety first. Cheap insurance.
.
I"ve got a front loader with the hydraulic pump on my PTO. I"d love to have a hand clutch, so that I can keep the hydraulics running and stop forward / reverse motion.

If you decide to remove the hand clutch, I am interested in it for my M. I have had polio and my left leg is not much good any more muscle wise. A hand clutch would make it a lot easier to play with.

You can take the small cover off and tighten the big nut on the front until you get a good snap when engaging the lever. Also you can look in the discussion forums under M&W clutch and you should find every thing you need in more detail. Good luck

I have one on my 49 m.It has the orignal handle"unbroke" and the boot.It works great. You can;t adjust these as far as I know. You need to take the disc's to a local cnc shop and have new ones made. What ever you do don't use this clutch to pull with just things like balers and sicklebars.

I believe M&W is still in business, but they"re not supporting these products. If you can"t get support from some of the good folk on this web site, try asking your local transmission shop or NAPA auto parts store. They may not be able to sell you off-the-shelf parts, but they may be able to reline the clutches, and maybe even weld-up and machine the disks.
I would LOVE to have one of these for my M.

Thanks for the input! I ended up looking at the clutch a little closer when I took it apart. I noticed that there were 4 bolt holes, and when the metal fins and the clutch pads line up just right you can put a bolt through the entire thing. Essentially I now have a non-working hand clutch, but I have no use for it. All I use my M for is pulling and brush hog. Do they make a conversion kit to put the tractor back to the way it was without a hand clutch?
