I was looking over my late '52 M and noticed that the casting number for the displacement is just plain old not there! Anyone seen this before? There's no evidence of mischiev or any reason for anyone to have removed it. It still has the other numbers.

The C-248 replaced the other number. You will have one, or you will have the other. You will not have both. Ms had the block part number, the super Ms had the cubic inch designation.

straight m tractors did not have the number with the displacement. that started with super m's.

Well, I've got a '50 model M that has "C-248" cast right where it should be. A friend of mine has about 50 tractors in his back yard and from what I've seen they all have 248, 264 or 281 cast on the block, depending on what it is (M, super M or 450).

I think you have a 50 and a 52 M with non original engine blocks. Check the date codes and also see if they have a engine serial #, the one with C248 cast on it probably has a date later than end of M production. Also may have a 6 digit casting number followed by R1 instead of 4 digit followed by 2 letters. For some reason casting numbers were ground off sometimes on replacement engines. Also for some reason in the sixties and possible late fifties IH sold some blocks with 248 cast on side that were actually the same OD of sleeve bore as C264 and C281 blocks

Ok, I went and looked at both tractors carefully and wrote the stuff down. I looked the numbers up carefully in the book.

Tractor "A", the one with the "missing" displacement number has a casting of 6722 DJ and a date code of 7-13-T, making it a 1950 block. Also I looked up the serial number again and it is a 1950 tractor. For some reason I thought it was a 52! I've had it for years and must have looked it up wrong a long time ago. My mistake on that one. Also the serial number on the block is precisely 11,000 numbers different then that on the tag, and according to some discussions in the archives, this was common in the later M's. Would you agree that this is the original block for this tractor?

Tractor "B" serial number makes it a '51. it does say C248 and also 6943DJ. The date code is 10-27-E which if I understand correctly would make it a 1959 casting! That clears things up. I'm glad you're around.

Now to clarify what you said earlier, it's possible that this replacement block has bigger _sleeve_ bores or the actual bigger sleeves?

Would agree that the 1950 is original. Think your other block with C 248 on it is the same bore size without sleeves installed as a stock M block. Ones I find that have C 248 on block and a bore size without sleeves installed that is the same as C 264 or C 281 blocks are cast number 365586 R91, if not ground off. All of these I have noticed were cast in sixties, but since there not that common I'm not sure about start dates. Also found some replacement blocks with same cast number 365586 R1 but have cast size C 264 or C 281. Another thing that may point to a replacement block is a small flate plate on block near carburetor, held with 2 bolts. Hope this helps.
