Hyd. Inlet Tube on 656-How Tough to Get To??

My 656 Gear Drive Gas hyd system is full of air. The inlet tube must be off or out of position. The last owner said he changed the return hose in the transmission through the PTO. When I stick a wire in thru the hyd filter inlet opening it stays straight and does not curve down.I understand this tube curves down. Any problems or things to watch if I pull the transmission top cover? Any other things to look for with this hyd problem? Are there gears in the way to get to this tube?? Thanks for the help.

There's several possible causes of this problem. I'm sure you've already made sure that the quad ring that seals the filter to the filter housing. Next comes the short tube between the filter housing and the pump, it has a seal around the outside of it. It's about a 10 minute job to replace the tube/seal assembley once you've got the oil drained. Next most likely is the return line from the aux. valves to the main pick-up tube. You can inspect that by removing the top 3-point hitch link bracket and looking inside the rear end housing, look for oil spray with the engine running. Then there's the main pick-up tube. I just replaced this on my 544, which has the same rear end as your 656. Tractor had to be split and the top shaft had to come out of the trans. The other possibilty is the o-ring between the clutch housing and trans housing.

I agree with Owen how ever there is one more thing. The 656 has a retrun hose to help prime the hydraulic system, it drops down from the underside of deck and attachs to the inlet tub. If this hose is bad or off at top or bottom the hyd will such air. So take the 3rd link plate off and look in the back and check the return hose, also check to see if the tub is tight.

The hole in the center of the filter housing goes accross to the hydraulic pump. Oil from the sump enters around the outside of the filter and passes through the filter or bypass to enter the pump.

The pickup tube is below the differential and PTO shaft. Oil is picked up from the bottom of the rear frame between the axles. There is also a seal between the rear frame and the clutch housing. The tractor has to be split to repace that seal. You could pull the PTO and inspect the back part of the oil pickup assembly. If you find no problems there, add about five gallons extra of Hy-Tran. If the split seal is leaking that should cure the air leak. If it does, just run it with the extra fluid.
