Alright, I have my 544 Hydro rowcrop. Have had NO issues ever with the hydro, but planting rye this past monday, every so often the tractor would just stop, like I depressed the "clutch". If I moved the speed control lever a bit it would made a loud clank and would have drive again. When I was turining on the ends of the feild and had to use the brakes to make the sharp turn the tractor was lugging down to the point I could have stalled the motor at lower rpms, so you think the hydro is not slipping. It just kinda seems to go into nuetral. I remember seeing some replies to another post on this issue, but cant find it. Any experience with this. I did get all the rye seeded just 30 minutes before we got a inch of rain.

Does this problem only occur when going forward? If you find nothing wrong with the external controls, the most likely problem is the snap ring is off the end of the shuttle valve in the center section. That allows the spring to come off the end off the spool so it no longer centers itself. You have to put it in reverse to get the spool to move so you can again go forward.

If you don't find the problem, I have the test tools for hydros. How far are you from Zumbrota?

Be sure and check the bolts that hold the fiberglass cover for the S/R lever. The holes will crack out and let the cover move. This changes the position of the lever. When you move the lever over to the side to go to forward or reverse you also seat a ball in the drive control valve. If the cover has shifted the ball can't seat properly, will loose drive pressure & tractor will stop. When the tractor stops idle down and push in on the lever see if it takes off again. If so adjust the cover as needed. This is a very common problem in an older tractor.Hope this helps

Well, I'll start with that first then. I was worried the hydro was going uot at first, but I can lock the brakes or put the bucket back on and push the earth and the engine will kill at lower rpms, and will dig with the tires at higher rpm's. Damn fine machine, hate to let it go down the road to the part it out shops like alot of other Hydro's.

Dave,

Even if you were right up against it, which I really don't think you are (this is something goofy in the mix), the worst it could be is a $5K repair.

Can you replace that tractor for $5K? You know as well as I, no ya can't. Fix it.

That kinda sounds like it was starving for oil. Where you down in low range?

Dunno,

I have heard of the anchor bolts breaking/falling out of the servos, which kinda falls in line with your moving the lever a touch and it "goes" again.

Guess if it were mine, I'd take the time to drop the oil and gently lower that lower plate cover just to see what is lying in the bottom of the old gal.

If it is nice and clean in there and all is where it should be, perhaps the problem is further back in the rear end? Like maybe it is slipping into/out of neutral or something? (This is a stretch, I know).

Dunno, having trouble placing that "clang" sound and the "binding" symptom together.

The early hydros had a different material on the pads of the pistons that would disintergate over time. Hope the old sister isn't unraveling on ya.

Drop that plate and let's see what's going on in there.
