The missus stopped by Lowes today and asked for this. Finally found someone who said to buy TSP. Is TSP washing soda?

Arm and Hammer washing soda in laundry aisle in Rome GA Food Lion store. Bought a BIG box and only used 15 oz in the cooker. Washed clothes today. Arm & hammer in the washer don't hold a light to Tide (MHO). David.

The various messages on WASHING SODA gets a little confusing at times. I assume the real problem is some stores sell the washing soda and others do not display the product on the shelves. To purchase LYE whick I used to use is no longer sold in any of the stores, was visiting in another province and the washing soda was on the store shelf, purchased a large box, ($4.99)The TSP is on most store shelves, although I have never used this for electrolis. As a note if you leave an item in too long with the washing soda it sometimes does too good a job of removing stubborn rust. Cheers, Murray

Seems like we fight this battle about every other week.

Washing soda is what most use. I have used it for about 4 months now with great success.

Washing soda is easy to find. It is in the laundry section of most grocery stores. It is NOT baking soda. It comes in the old Arm and Hammer Brand. It is in a yellow box.

TSP is a strong cleanser. Tri Sodium Phosphate.
Not the same stuff as washing soda, but I hear it works for some.

YOU have stated, repeatedly, that it is easy to find. PLEASE come to Spooner and show me and all the store Clerks where we can find it,
SDE

I think it is a matter of luck. I have looked for it repeatedly over the last year and not found it. This afternoon it was right there on the shelf at the local market. Go figure!

Now I have used lye in the past but never washing soda. How much per gallon (and I promise to write it on the front of the box and never ask again!)?

I added 20 mule team borax and the amps jumped from 6 to 10. I wasn't able to find washing soda and used baking soda (bicarbonate) and then added the borax. Worked great.

If you are using this for electrolysis that TSP is preferred from what I have read.

'the official name is sodium carbonate' as I found out by typing in the words - washing soda - into the dialog box and searching the Farmall forum in searching the archives. Sure sounds like a great way to prep for tractor painting. TSP = tri-sodium phosphate. By my reading, it is the washing soda you want, Arm & Hammer is a packager of it.

I finally gave up here in our area and bought a jar of PH up at the pool section of Wal-mart and it reads as Sodium carbonate on ingredients.

Yes, that's the easiest to find, and likely the CHEAPEST. I bought a pail of it at a pool supply place a couple of years ago that'll I'll probably never use up, for CHEAP!
