I have a 766 diesel that has the low range in the TA going out since I got it. It will slip when in low range(TA back) but has always done just fine when in direct drive(TA forward until this weekend. I mainly only do hay and pasture therefore am not in a real need to use the TA. Saturday it started slipping when I was disking uphill to sow some hay ground even in direct drive. My question is it the clutch that needs to be looked at or could it be the TA that is causing the problems. Thanks in advance.

It has to be the t/a if it"s only in the low side. But since you need to split it I"d replace the clutch also.

It's hard to say at this point. Remove the main clutch inspection cover (two bolts, directly under main clutch). If it's the main clutch, you'll be able to smell it when you drop that cover. Also see if there's any oil dripping out from the inspection cover.

What you have disscribe Sounds like the Main Clutch.

(AND) as allen SAID don't even attemped to put that tractor back together without the PTO drive Gear.
Very small investment.I'am a three time looser There.

No use going in there and only doing it part way. Replace that PTO input gear too, as it is a high wear item.
