I just installed new cylinder sleeves. The book calls out .000-.005 above the deck. All of mine are .009 above and they seem to be hitting solid in the counter bore is this something to worry about or will it be ok.Engine is in tractor.
thanks in advance.

A retired mechanic, bought a 165 Massey from a neighbor. He had the head and block planed and when he installed the pistons, they were to high. He marked the pistons, removed them, used a hose clamp as a guide, and ground them down with an angle grinder. Just an example of "thinking outside the box", or someone's "can-do" attitude.
He loves that tractor.

**GOOD** discussion! Makes me think that when I do the engine on my M, I should take the sleeves and measure the lips and grooves before I get too deep. THANK Y"ALL!

Been there on a Super C. Excessive protrusion will result in water leakage. I've shaved the tops of the sleeves on three Farmall rebuilds so far. If you measure accurately, take enough off to leave a couple thousandths sticking up. Don't try to make them flush and risk going too far. Below is a no-no. I just had my SH block milled with the sleeves in to get a perfect flush, obviously not a good option for you.

Where are you getting water leakage? To the outside? The head gasket seals the top of the sleeve. I put the sleeve in upside down to check it. The groove has to be perfectly clean. They should be a couple thousands above the deck, never below.

I would have your local auto machine shop to remove .004" to .005" off each sleeve. Make sure that counterbore is clean in the block. I would've thought the sleeves would have been a standard height. Hal

Nine is excessive. Machining it is possible with a portable boring bar. I would do that. It could be flat filed if you are very good at it. Making a ring shaped buffer from .008" shimstock, and filing or gringing with care to that would work as well. JimN
