Guy,
I have asked this question on here before, but the answers vary too much for me to make a decision. Do you know what serial # they changed the paint color to red on the F12? Is the "paint decision 100" memo accurate? If it is then anything after November 1, 1936 is red. According to my info they made about 30,000 F 12's in 1936. If you break that down by month then only about 5000 are red. My brother-in-laws is numbered at about 15,000 of 1936 production. Probably made in June or July. i told him it should be gray. He says there is nowhere on the tractor with gray paint, only red. Mine is a 1935, Serial # 42242. I am going to paint it gray. Any help with this question would be appreciated. I have read and used some of your books, excellent resources. Thank you.My e-mail is open.

I am working on a 1737 McCormick Deering O-12. i need some info on the tractor, i know somethings about it but if you had a book or anything that would help me that would be great. the tractor was picked top 10 in the nation for the ffa tractor restoration competition. i will be going to the national ffa convention to give and oral presinaton to a group of judges. i would like some more info on the tractor than i have to help me, if you had a book or anything that could help me that would be great. if i need to buy a book from you to help me, just give me a name of the book and a way to get it that would be fine also
thank you Eric Haugen Montevideo MN

November 1st 1936 equates to the first "1937" tractor. That being said, there do appear to be red tractors produced before that (possible especially with the twelve series, as Chicago Tractor Works had been painting T-20s red for some time).

Other tractors that should be gray may appear to be all red to to repainint by dealerships (which had steam cleaners)

Thanks Guy. I would imagine there were a bunch of carryover tractors repained red by dealers the next spring. I had not thought of that before.

Everything we pulled apart on ours had only red paint on it. There were no traces of gray anywhere on the tractor. Here is a before pic:

I figured there was a lot of repainting during overhaul as well. I guess the big dealer free paint job with overhaul program was mostly letter series in the late fifties.

Oh yeah, LOTs of that, and trade-ins too. The only ones that didn't get painted were the ones that stayed on the farm.

I have a 1936 F-12 that I didn't find any gray paint on.

On this forum, I was told that all Farmall tractors until the first serial number in 1937 should be gray.

I don't think there is a definitive answer, because IHC wouldn't dump out a bunch of gray paint, nor would they open a new batch to paint a few tractors. I think there probably was an overlap somewhere.

Good luck figuring it out.

Dan

I don't recall the exact serial number of my F12 (I can get it if you like), but it's a 1935 and has only had red paint on it. So we repainted it red.
