A few years back, before the infamous "Nebraska Tractor Ban" ;), I knew of several IH FWA tractors within 50 miles of me, from 560's with Elwoods up to 966's.

I have never heard of an Elwood on a 560. But I have seen a few 806 thru 1066 tractors with factory 4 wheel drive up here in South Dakota. Was the Elwood setup hydraulic or mechanical drive? Hmm, wonder if I could fit one on my 460?

I have an Elwood on a 660. That unit will fit M's and later variants in that frame size. No, it won't go on to a 460.

It is mechanical. Seach on "Elwood" in the archives. Click on my posts and you will see some pictures of the gearbox and axle.

Thanks for the pic! I thought it might be driven kind of like that from the "Belt Pulley Drive Gear" Looks like it must be chain drive inside the housing? Or a long shaft with bevel gears?
I wonder if you could send a pic of the front axle too? Thank you.

Don't have much on the axle. Most of my front pictures only show the snowplow.

The FWA gearbox is not driven off the belt pulley drive gear. While it does cover the belt pulley opening in the rear frame cover, the driven gear meshes with one of the sliding gears on the mainshaft. Can't tell you which one because I have never taken the gearbox off. I would guess the fourth/fifth slider: specifically the fourth gear. The tractor has FWA in all gears including TA. If the gearbox was connected to the BP driving gear, it would only have one speed and only one direction.

Yes, it is chain drive with a double roller chain.

Right, I was just thinking that last night - The ratio could not be right in all gears if driven from the belt pulley or transmission input gear. Very interesting.

I kinda doubt it. I don't think there are any tractors in Nebraska.
