Hey Guys,

Need some help again. Just got up the nerve to go take the clutch shaft out and look at the clucth. I had run the motor with the shaft not completely connected, just one bolt in actually. Broke the piece that bolts up to the top of the housing that holds the shaft/throwout and the sleeve. Got new ones, put them in, though I was ok. Drove her for about 15 minutes and started feeling a little rattle underneath as I let clutch out. Got home and shaft was not rotating smoothly and looked like the clutch as not either. The center where that shaft goes through is off kilter. Grandad thought it had to be the shaft being bent, but I took it out and ran it and looked up inside and can see it"s not rotating right even without the shaft. The flywheel is good and turning smooth, and the plate looks ok, just the center seems to be wobbling.

Any ideas on what I"ve done and what I might need to do to fix it?

When I ran it without the shaft in right, the shaft swung out to the outside as it rotated on one bolt making a big circle around the piece it connects to going into the transmission.

As you can imagine I"m feeling pretty stupid about now.

Thanks,

Brian

Is the clutch shaft coupler plate installed correctly? If installed backwards the clutch shaft will pull out of the pilot bearing and allow the disk to go off center.

You know, I think that's it. After I ran it loose, it must've bent the plate, then when I though I had the shaft in, it wasn't really lined up anymore and going all the way in.

Thanks Owen

I will go along with JimN. I also think the clutch disc is bent.

Indi, I remember the situation from before. I believe I implied then and am stating now, the clutch driven disk with the friction facings on it is bent. The only real solution is a different new disk. I say this because even if a good shop was able to make it run true, the stresses that have been applied to it, and the potential cracks in it (hidden) are not worth the trouble, and repair labor to fix when it breaks again. Heat of normal operation will also re-warp the hub of that disk and cause a dragging clutch (grinds gears and won't release all the way)later when you need the unit to work. You are doing a good job of telling us what is going on, I'm sorry it came apart, but learning it this way is permanent. JimN

Hey Jim,

I don't remember you telling me like that before, but thanks. Seems like I read I can replace that from underneath?

Brand stinking new too.

Yes you can replace an H clutch without splitting the tractor, it comes out through the pump opening.
