Pullin' a hayride this evening, having a great time, hit of the party...but, in 5th going up a grade, she slipped just a little. Never done a clutch on a tractor that size...is it a tough job?

OK...2 points to clarify:
1. Fifth was only used to travel the last leg of the trip on the road...the rest was in 3rd or 2nd.
2. She is a 1953 Super M, so, I guess she has to be split to do it right...If that's the case, I'll take her to the shop cause I don't have a good way to deal with all that weight.

As noted below, The disk might be able to be changed W/O splitting. Though the PP and orher parts are often changed when slipping, old practice was just change the disk. It will take serious geometric thinking and wiggling to do it, but it might be just what you need, If it puts several more years into the split necessity, I would do it without hesitation. JimN

If you just use the tractor for light work you can get the disc out on a SU-M but not the pressure palate. SU-MTA must be split. Just another thought.

The clutch on a Super M is 12". The tractor would have to be split to change it. (M is 11" clutch by the way).

M's if they haven't been converted to the larger super M clutch don't need to be split. You can do the clutch through the hole for the belly pump. If it has been upgraded or is a super M it needs to be split. I know the super M disk and pressure plate are bigger, but I'm unsure of what size the M vs the Super M clutch is.

I use fifth on hayrides. It does not need to be wide open, maybe 10 mph. but (if the kids are managed) it is a nice ride. Sorry, only Ms can be changed (to the best of my experience) Check free play at 1 inch from the platform, if it slips it is toast. JimN

OMG, fifth gear on an unsprung hay wagon? How many kids were bounced off or did you lose track?

M's don't have to be split. That is probably true for Super M's but I don't know. SMTA's need to be split.
