Hello,

I just finished restoring my gas tank, and I just went to reinstall. I did not touch anything else, tractor sat over the winter, and this summer. It ran before I took the tank off. I cannot get it to start. I checked that fuel is getting to the carb. It cranks fine, will not fire. I checked the ignition system and found it had a 12 volt coil, on the 6 volt electrical system. Could this be a problem, and, still, it ran with this coil before I took the tank off. I am stumped, but this is my first tractor.

As Carl said in the movie Sling Blade "Its probably the points" thats the FIRST suspect when she stops firing. Check then for gap and if badly burned or pitted replace them or maybe try a point file to clean them up as a temporary fix. If you need my Troubleshooting Procedure post back or search the archives.

If it's not the points or condenser. check the grounding of the coil to the engine block

In all my days, I have never seen that make a difference in a metal mount. JimN

Jim, I also dont recall tractor coils that used the outer metallic case as one of the conductors (ground). I see the case as what holds the oil and protects n electrically isolates the primary and secondary coil windings. Ive heard talk about the coils case as a ground but just havent seen any personally.... John T

John,
I found an interesting site with nice graphics for oscilloscope traces. Also explained are the components we have been discussing. No ground through the "can" is correct. THe earthing is all (pretty complex) decay through the secondary to the switch, and the Condenser. Very interesting, and no where intuitive. Kinda like a center connected self inducting auto transformer! JimN

Well after I went out side and got buisy grouting in the corners of paving bricks I used to create a egress window box, I realized I teased everyone and did not put in the link. Well here it is by gum. Sorry JimN

A 12v coil that is designed to use an external ballast resistor (it might be labeled as such) will be fine to use on 6v with no resistor. If it is designed to be used on a no resistor required "true 12v coil" then it is a poor choice even if it did run. JimN

You should check for battery voltage at the coil's small terminals with the points open and your ignition switch on. Use a test lite or volt meter. I would clean those points with some 320 wet or dry until shiny too. Hal

try cleaning up the points with some 320 grit sandpaper. could have a little corrosion from sitting

Yep, the points need cleaning. Not at all unusual.
