Hi Everyone,

I went to NAPA today to get parts for My 1943 Farmall H. The oil seals that go on the brake drum shafts are bad. I went to NAPA to see if they had the seals, but they need the seal part number. I don't have a H parts book, so could someone let me know what the part number for the seals is?

1943 Farmall H
5 speeds forward, one reverse
Serial no. FBH-133801
C-152 4 cyl. engine

Thanks!

Andy, as stated the new seals are much thinner and made of a polyurethene, much like seals found in newer vehicles. They do the job. My dealer told me to mount them on the shaft tight to the tractor casting. You can move them enough so they are not in the groove worn by the originals. getting the old seals out takes time and patience, remember, the bearing is behind the seal so you have to be careful not to damage them as you remove the seal. Lots of ideas on seal removal, seal puller doesn't always work, drill small hole and insert metal screw and pull with vise grips, picking chisels work well, cut side of the seal and then collapse the seal out of round, it usually comes then..good luck

I agree with you on the one seal concept. I don't understand why people think they need to put two seals in where the old style leather seal was. Like you said, you can install the seal so that it is in a spot on the shaft where it is not grooved. All modern machinery has only one seal just like the replacement you buy at CNH or where ever you get them. There is even a down side to two seals in that the outside seal is running dry as it gets no lubrication from the transmission fluid or whatever you are sealing. Roger

I tried that with my M and the first dealership said the part was obsolete. So then I went to the CNH website and got the number myself. Ordered it twice from a second dealer and waited five days, NOTHING! Went to NAPA and they had them at the store from the main warehouse IN 3 HOURS. Guess who's gonna get my business.

Because CNH thinks their parts are made from gold, and a National or other name brand is just as good AND cheaper. Another reason for me is that the nearest Dealer is 50 miles away and the nearest parts house is right up the road.

The CNH price is "usually" higher, the CNH seals ARE National or Chicago rawhide. I sometimes buy from CNH, sometimes from a local bearing/seal dealer. The seals are the same.

Replaced the left side brake shaft seals on my M earlier this spring... Both were CR seals in CNH packaging... Price was steep. Takes 2 seals per side as the new ones are thin, single lip seals.

Existing leather seals are a real PITA to remove. Get a GOOD seal puller or drill and run a sheet metal screw in and get a slide hammer on it. Real estate is tight. You can't remove the carrier housing to make it easier without first getting inside of the rearend housing to get the gear out of the way. You'll break the housing if you do not.

Hi Andy, The seal numbers Nebraska Kirk gave are all good although only one number may be in the books now. The new seals may be different than the old leather ones, but should work fine. If you have a bearing house nearby, get the seals from them, A LOT cheaper than Napa.
