Is there anyway to take some of the play out of my H steering? I can move the steering wheel about half a turn without the wheels moving, it really shakes going down the road in 5th. The tractor does not have alot of hours so I do not think it is worn out. I did have the steering shaft out of it to replace the radiator, did I put something together wrong? I do not think it was like that before I took it apart, but I just got it and never really drove it.

There"s a castle nut inside the steering box that keeps the shaft from moving forward or backward when you turn the steering wheel. It can be adjusted to take a lot of the slop out of the steering. Have someone turn the steering wheel while you watch how things move and you"ll see how to tighten it.

The castle nut is not for any adjustment. It is used to hold the inner bearing race tight against the worm gear.

If the shaft moves in and out when turning the steering wheel, check the nut for being tight, bearing worn to the point where it is loose between the races, and play between the outer bearing race and the front cap plug.

remove the front grille, and take the cover off the top of the front bolster. it will expose the worm and sector gears. turn the steering shaft and see how much play there is at the gears. if they are worn, pretty common, you will need to replace the steering shaft that has the worm gear on it and the gear on top of the bolster. if the gear on top of the bolster is a full circle gear, you can remove it and turn it 180 degrees. if its the gear thats about 3/4 's round, you will need to replace em. also check the u-joints in the steering shaft, there are bushings and bearings in the bolster that wear out too.

Check the U-joint. Where that bolts together there should be a washer in between each section of U-joint. That washer slides into a slot on the top of the lower shaft that acts as a woodruff key. It sounds like you didn't put that washer in there, and the upper shaft is just spinning until it catches something on the lower shaft to turn the wheels.
