Ok, I got the good stuff from Loctite and secured my two loose sleeves. Now one of the two that fit right does not have the right protrusion. It varies as you go around the circle, from +.002 to flush to -.0015. It is either flush or better for about 60 - 70 % of the circle. Problem or not?? If a problem can I simply drive it back up far enough to insert a few pieces of .002" shim stock under the rim??

If the sleeves are tight in the block, you can resurface the block after the sleeves are installed. That would make sure the sleeves are all flush. It saves redoing the counter bores, but could cause a problem the next time someone wants to replace sleeves.

I like that idea. I think the worst case for future overhauls, (which I doubt this tractor will ever have)is that the tops of the sleeves will need to have a few thousandths shaved off of the top. I've had to do this to new sleeves on two of my previous restorations where I didn't touch the deck. Either someone else had milled the block and not redone the c-bores or the sleeve rims were too thick.

I have a Super C that someone thought that way. They apparently had machined the block deck and didn't machine the counterbores. This was one my early tractor restoration projects and I didn't check how far they stuck up resulting in a leaking head gasket. I finally had the sleeves machined to match the lip. Roger

Wet sleeve engines like the Super C are not good candidates for decking the block with the sleeves in place. It is too hard to insure they are fully seated while they are being machined. You could end up with a sleeve too low.

A sleeve puller will for sure take it out. The sleeve may be defective. Measuring it will provide that answer. If it were flush I would not worry But recessed is (in my mind) problematic. If you measure the rim and it has axial runout, either get a different one (if time will allow) or shim it as you described and go with it. JimN

Almost sounds like the deck of the block is warped. The correct fix would have been to have the block machined flat and then have the counterbores machined. I think you may be a little too far in to turn back now, unless you can remove the sleeves that you loctited.

I checked the block and it is flat as a pancake, however, upon further inspection I discovered that all four of the sleeves are slightly higher on the same side but three of the four don't go below the deck. It appears that the deck was cut at a slight angle to the bores. The engine ran well for years and didn't leak so I will go with the shims to raise the one sleeve that dips into negative territory. Interesting.
