I was at the Farm Science Review in London, Ohio this week and noticed a Farmall WD-40 Diesel. On one side, I noticed a typical diesel injection pump and four injectors. However, on the other side, there were four spark plugs and an intake manifold with what looked like a carburetor on it. Can anyone tell why the tractor had both a carb and injector pump? I have seen dual fuel gas and kerosene but I had never heard of diesel and gas.

A minor correction: It's an INTERNATIONAL (not a Farmall) WD40. It was the first diesel-powered American wheeled tractor.

JimN: Largest wheeled tractor with the gas-start diesel was the 650D. Largest crawler was the TD24. Largest power unit was the UD1091 - same engine as in the TD24.

Fascinating first generation diesel engines!

No idea about how the things work but the talk about a WD-40 reminded me of one I saw sell at an auction last summer here in South Dakota. I remember it was a 1935 model, pretty complete, but stuck tight. It sold for $6000...would've been a great addition but me and Grandpa don't have a pocketbook that deep :)

ive never seen one of that model but the reason for a carb and injection pump is be cuase farmall diesils from america started on gas warmed up then were manualy switched over to run on diesel

Plenty of info in the archives as well!
Three valve head with a spark plug above the small third valve. The intake is butterfly valved to allow the switch to gasoline for starting.
Third valve open on all cylinders
Intake set to small wide open carb
Diesel fuel not injecting
Mag (or coil on)
Starts on gasoline, then when warmed for 30 seconds if warm out, or 2 minutes if cold, the switch is made to Diesel on the fly.
Not really operational in Gas mode, Will move in low or second.
THey are complex, but fine economical engines used up to and including 450D, and many dozers. Farmall M class was smallest, I think the six in a TD35 or 40 was tha biggest in a mobile machine. Stationary Powerplants may have been bigger. JimN
