Got dad"s SMTA running but has a miss when idling, replaced everything new, points, plugs, coil, wires does pull good under load, could it be timing or valve setting or cracked manifold. Also when we had it on the plow it stopped in 2nd gear, but went again when load was reduced, is clutch going bad or just need adjusting?

Had a M that run great cold, but after it got warmed up it started missing. Put it under load and it sounded good till it quit pulling. I ended up putting a new aftermarket manifold on it and noe it sounnds like a new tractor.

Many times a idle problem is a leaking manifold gasket. It usually wont cause a problem when speeded up or when pulling a load. Hope this helps.

Please don't mistake me for an expert, but our B had a few hiccups at all speeds...guess you could call it a miss....until I timed the engine and adjusted the valve clearances. Then it stopped at all speeds except idle. Both the B and our MTA have this little flaw in the idle and I have not found a way to stop it. All in all, they run and work really well and sometimes I think it just might be something you come to expect on tractors that old. Maybe the experts will tell you different, but I just learned to live with it because it seemed to harm nothing.

Idle issues could be one of those, or a combo. The fuel age could be as well. If there is an inch of free play in the clutch pedal, and the tractor stopped (tires not turning engine running, the clutch is toast. (assumes TA forward) JimN
