Forgot to pick up a couple of gallons of case primer when I was at the dealer. Now Iam 2 hrs away and hate to drive that distance again just for the primer. Iam repainting one of my old A tractors. Removed rust. now need a good primer. Anyone have a good name brand primer to use with the I.H 2150 paint. Dupont or some other. Thanks

Dupont has some products that they sell under the Nason name and are less expensive than the Dupont stuff. They have a two epoxy (great for the cast iron parts and for filling rust pitting) and a sandable kind for your sheet metal. They both work good with 2150 IH red

Seems to me if you go thru all the trouble of cleaning up a tractor, not to much harder to do a proper job when it comes to painting. Everyone knows primer is key to shooting paint on bare metal especially old metal that may contain some rust.

I totally agree. If you're just going to blow paint at, don't even bother. For 1, you're wasting your money and 2, steam cleaning, wire brushing, scraping, sandblasting, that's the bad part. Spraying paint is fun. If you don't do it properly the smallest bit a grease, oil, or fuel will work its way under your new paint and pop it off.

You don't need primer with that 2150 paint. IH did not use primer when they first painted that tractor, and you don't need it either.

I'm with Allan. Why do you need primer anyway?? The purpose of primer is to give new paint something to adhiere to on new bare metel or anyplace you have done body work.
Shoot paint on the durn thing..

I painted this two weeks ago , no primer, been hanging outside in the weather. Still looks wet!!!

Epoxy primer PPG Omni MP 170 will work fine, I don't know the number of the DuPont equivalent. If you are smoothing out your sheet metal you need a sandable surfacer/primer surfacer over it. Epoxy is not a "filling" primer and generally is not sandable. It can be used alone on smooth surfaces or on cast iron. It is also waterproof.

One of the DuPont epoxy primers is Corlor 825S. It is "high build" and sandable. The Corlor name is also used with a single component primer which I don't think is suitable for surfacing.

The two part is great for filling rust pits. You can "lay it on" using a narrow fan and minimal thinner. I usually heat it up to get it out of a siphon gun.

I used to buy both products by the pallet. I was using the industrial grade but it is also formulated for autobody.

Here is a little tip. If you mix an excess amount of the two part epoxy Corlor, you can put it in the freezer and it will go into a "coma" indefinitely. Months later you can thaw it out and it will perform as intended.

Why do you need a primer?

It's a tractor; throw the paint at it.
